The World Food Day and the concept of Zero Hunger

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

Today, the 16th of October, is observed as World Food Day every year. In the light of the current pandemic of Covid-19, the day is being celebrated with the theme - "Grow, nourish, sustain. Together. Our actions are our future."

The UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) was established on 16th October, 1945. To commemorate this day, the World Food Day is celebrated every year with a new theme. The objective is to create awareness about the existing problems of obesity and malnutrition due to hunger.

In this context, I would like to tell you more about the term "Zero Hunger". This is one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN. This aims to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition by 2030, making sure all people - especially children - gave sufficient, nutritious food all year. This involves:

promoting sustainable agriculture

supporting small scale farmers

equal access to land, technology and markets

Zero hunger pledges to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and is the priority of the World Food Programme. The challenge of Zero Hunger means: All food systems are sustainable: from production to consumption.

Let your food be your medicine, but not medicine be your food. Happy World Food Day!
