SOORARAI POTTRU - a film review

Updated: May 12, 2021

"A sparrow cannot become an eagle but my son will change that." One of the most powerful, exalting dialogues of Indian cinema is this simple sentence from the very recently released Tamil film 'Soorarai Pottru'. The film came as a delight to all Suriya fans, including me. There is something magical in this film, I feel, that has pushed me to post a review about the film - the life of a village man, who, through his continuous pursuit, could reach the helm of success - that, the film is more than a brilliant story brought to life - before we jump into the review per se, I would remark that you will not regret the time invested.

The movie succeeds in keeping the audience interested and enraptured throughout. The storyline revolves around the journey of an ex-Air Force officer ,Nedumaaran(essayed by Suriya), to achieve his dream of establishing an airline service that is cheap and affordable to the common man. Maaran and his wife Bommi(essayed by Aparna Balamurali) both showcase individuals who are crazy about their big dreams. Stellar performances by the lead actors embed the film, Suriya has taken a lot of effort to portray his character, which is roughly based on G.R.Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan. Aparna has proved yet again that it does not take a filmy background or mind-blowing looks or tons of make-up to hold the audience captivated. Urvashi gave her best shot at essaying Pechi, Nedumaaran's mother - her emotional scenes are more life-like. Perfect villain characters have been added seamlessly to the story that intensifies the beauty of the storyline. At some places, one could feel a lump rising steadily in one's throat; at some instance, happy tears.

The film shows us how the core connection between capitalists and bureaucrats has been contributory in crushing anyone who dares to dream big. The film takes us on an elaborate journey that shows us that whatever hurdles be, it is one's constant desire and consistent striving that makes a mark in the end. The lesson imbibed from this movie will stay for some time, I feel, in the minds of the audience. Overall, the movie is more than a one time-watchable - it is the truly inspiring story of one of the successful entrepreneurs of India - a story of building success from the scratch. I reiterate, you will not regret the time invested!
