INTERNSHIP DIARIES #3 - TIPS FROM THE HOUSESURGEON

The finest of all medical advice should be garnered from articles and speeches by veteran doctors and experts in the field. Not from armchair strategists. I do not identify myself as an expert, nor as an armchair strategist. However, I have condensed the learnings of my internship - how to care for your overall health as a working individual.

1. YOUR FOOD - THE PLATING METHOD
You're what you eat, said someone. Plating method is an effective and easy method to bring all nutrients to your plate. Divide your plate into four equal quadrants. Each quadrant represents each type of food. Fill your first quadrant with cereals like rice and wheat. Fill the next quadrant with meat, fish and poultry products. Now you're left with half a plate, fill it with vegetables. This way of plating meals ensures that you have your fair share of nutrients every day.

2. THE VITAL LIQUID
Water cleanses the gut and aids in elimination of toxic wastes. Hence, drinking adequate amounts of water is paramount. I'd say that there is no fixed number of glasses you should down per day, as fluid requirements vary greatly among individuals. Eating water-rich foods such as salads will also contribute to the total fluid intake.

3. SCREENTIME - THE ONE HOUR RULE
Imagine you wake up daily at 6 AM and hit the sack by 10 PM. Refrain from using technology till 7 AM in the morning and from 9 PM to 10 PM at night. This conscious step will decrease your overall screentime by 2 hours, and it will improve your sleepwake cycle too.

4. THE PERFECT STRETCH
Exercise has to be fine-tuned, especially if you have a sedentary work style. Start your day with jumping jacks and crunches. Stretch your body for at least 10 minutes every morning. Early morning muscular activity is instrumental in improving the cerebral perfusion and sets the momentum for your day.

5. THE MINIMALIST APPROACH
Declutter your room at least once a week. This will wash out the circulating negative energies and bring a new aura to your room. The minimalist attitude helps you to sort out things that are no longer needed in your room. You can use foldable chair-table set and a single blind for curtains. Storage shelves can be replaced with Ottomans and niches.

6. JOURNALLING YOUR THOUGHTS
Trouble falling asleep? Binaural beats are not the only option here. Take a diary and start journalling. Jot down your secrets, thoughts and visions, before you go to bed. This exercise calms your mind and unwinds the soul.

I hope you've found this blog interesting and worthwhile. Comment your favourite tip and stay tuned for more!
