Hi friends, nice to talk to you again, but this time on a more serious topic - the validation that a woman needs from the patriarchal society. Confused?
This post is based on a real life incident that many girls and women across India has faced - and that I had faced just yesterday. Due to personal reasons, I would like to keep the adverbs of time, place and whatsoever under the wraps.
Just as I was jollying with one of my friends, an elderly woman cut me short, saying thus - "Are you covering your neck?"
I said, "Excuse me, what did you mean?"
"Is a shawl used to cover one's neck?"
I had wrapped the shawl around my neck in such a way that the two free ends of the fabric hung loosely on either side and I looked again - yes, everything was in place..... then?
I flushed with anger and was about to retort when my friend pulled me away.
For all men and women and women out there...... let me raise a few questions....
1. Do you think the innumerable cases of assault on females happen due to their attire?
2. If your answer to the question above is yes, answer this:
The innocent sisters of Walayar, the tiny girl from Kathua, and numerous other unreported POCSO cases from different parts of India.... do you think that the assaults happened on them because they dressed inappropriately?
What about the old women who get assaulted? And what about that innocent teenage girl from a northern state.... she wanted to study further.... and mercilessly she got raped and beaten up by some lusted wolves that we call men. What about the veterinary surgeon who was raped and burnt alive....??? Did they get assaulted primarily because their clothes were inappropriate?
3. What do you think is of paramount importance - teaching females to cover themselves in public OR teach males not to do inappropriate things?
4. And this is the take-home question - what do the victims of sexual assault have in common?
