The STEP-B to be happy

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

Popularly called the happiness hormone, serotonin is a mood stabilizer chemical that contributes to happiness and wellbeing. It is found mostly in the digestive system, blood platelets and brain cells and has a multitude of functions in the human body. It is a neurotransmitter synthesized from the essential amino acid tryptophan - thus, tryptophan deficiency leads to low serotonin levels, which can result in anxiety or depression.

Serotonin has roles to play in the normal physiological functions of sleeping, eating and digestion. Apart from these, it helps maintain bone health, control bowel movements and regulate mood, sexual function and the sleep-wake cycle.

According to a 2007 study, low levels of serotonin were linked with depression. Serotonin deficiency has also been linked to anxiety and insomnia.

Following the STEP-B strategy can boost your serotonin level and make you feel happier, calmer and emotionally more stable.

Sunlight - Spending some time in the sun can boost your serotonin levels. Remember, you need to spend time in the sun without sunscreen!

Tryptophan - Tryptophan (which is required to synthesize serotonin) may not be absorbed well when taken with other protein sources so a tryptophan supplement must be taken apart from other proteins.

Exercise - Cardio has been found to boost serotonin levels.

Probiotics - Probiotics like yogurt and kimchi balance gut function and enhance nutrient absorption.

B complex vitamins - Vitamins B3 and B6 are essential in the synthesis of serotonin from tryptophan.

Everyone wants happiness,

No one wants pain.

But you can't have a rainbow

without a little rain.

As Tolstoy said,"If you want to be happy, be."
